Becoming and working as a hvac in Maine

HVAC technicians install and service the heating, cooling and ventilation equipment that keeps Maine buildings warm through long winters — oil and propane boilers and furnaces, heat pumps and air-conditioning systems.

License path

  • Maine has no separate HVAC license on the OPOR professions index. Heating work on oil, solid fuel, propane and natural gas equipment is licensed through the Maine Fuel Board, and refrigerant handling needs federal EPA Section 608 certification.
  • Oil burner and solid fuel technicians are licensed by the Maine Fuel Board at three levels: Apprentice, Journeyman and Master. An apprentice license requires a completed application.
  • The journeyman exam requires 1 year as a licensed apprentice, or a 160-hour board-approved course (at least 75 lab hours) plus 6 months as an apprentice, or a one-year Maine community college heating course of at least 320 hours (150 lab hours).
  • The Maine Fuel Board issues a Propane and Natural Gas Helper license, which requires a completed application, and a Propane and Natural Gas Technician license.
  • A technician license carries one or more authorities: Delivery Technician, Plant Operator, Tank Setter and Outside Piping, Appliance Connection and Service, and Large Equipment Connection and Service.
  • Federal law requires technicians who service or dispose of equipment that could release refrigerants to be EPA Section 608 certified. Apprentices are exempt while closely and continually supervised by a certified technician.
  • EPA has four Section 608 certification types: Type I for small appliances, Type II for high- or very high-pressure appliances (except small appliances and MVACs), Type III for low-pressure appliances, and Universal for all types.
